Mikey Bustos: Filipino, bald, and funny

Mikey Bustos

To list down the number of reasons why Mikey Bustos rocks my YouTube subscriptions would be a great task. He just packs all kinds of awesome in his videos; he makes me want to stalk him so that he can sign my forehead.

Just see for yourself.

He’s been around for a long time now, making waves since his Canadian Idol stint in 2003. He produced a lot of music. He sang in concerts. He won awards. He appeared in TV commercials. And became a front act for the Pussycat Dolls in 2006, and for Christina Aguilera in 2007.

But that’s not the reason why I like him. I first saw Mikey on YouTube: him, his song covers, and his quirky Filipino tutorial videos, which insanely express the huge amounts of fun we Filipinos take for granted.

In one of his videos, he shows us (Filipinos) and the world just how cool and crazy some of the things we do everyday can be: drinking coffee, blowing a plastic balloon, receiving compliments, getting free stuff, becoming a celebrity, etc. There are a lot of things and activities we Filipinos do, yet take for granted. Mikey reminds us that these little things are what make us awesome Filipinos–that we shouldn’t take these for granted.

To make it simple, he expresses Filipino culture in a new light. He piques the interest of foreigners, and, amazingly, shows us (Filipinos) just how true and funny it is. And he talks with such awesome wit. You should see his videos for yourself.

Maybe one day I will meet Mikey. I will tell him how awesome being bald is (yeah, I should know: I like being bald). I will tell him that, maybe someday, we will rule the world. And I will take him on an Alibata essay writing contest.

That’s all, basketball!
